Slope confinement may be dealt with using a variety of techniques, tecnology and materials. Expert knowledge is required for the right choice in each case.

Usually embankment slope instability include mass movement from a fragile zone. Efficient confinement action is required in such cases, such as tied curtains, nailed soil, retaining walls and others.

PROBLEM
A slope showing general instability, widespread erosion, sliding, mass movement and limited space for earth works and equipment. Shotcrete was originally applied over the slope surface, but results were not forthcoming. The agency responsible for the operations required eliminating earth movement, improving the view and greater efficiency compared to previous results.

SOLUTION
The nailed green soil system, used to stabilize soil or rock slopes, was chosen. The surface to be stabilized is straightened, hydrosowed and protected using a coconut fiber anti-erosion biodegradable blanket. The surface is then covered with a high resistance steel mesh anchored to pre-sized and steel plate pre-stressed (with a specific force) nails. On reacting to tension, the steel mesh is forced against the slope, thus avoiding deformation, sliding and local fractures. The external tension increases system safety and efficiency.

RESULTS
After concluding the nailed green soil system, there was no erosion  even during strong rainfall. This is due to plant roots reaching different soil layer depth, anti-erosion biodegradable blanket protection, nails and a metallic mesh. Two months later, the vegetation is well established, there is visual improvement and sliding or mass movement has ceased.
